Practical Skills (LH 101)
Students apply their training, knowledge and skills acquired in the College gardening courses to the operation of the gardens at the HCP three afternoons per week. In addition, students work with volunteers on Wednesday mornings and participate in field trips, weekend maintenance at the HCP, and special plant sales and garden shows.

Botany (LH 102)
An introduction to basic plant physiological processes such as photosynthesis, respiration, transpiration and metabolism: role of plant hormones, life cycle strategies used by plants to overcome adverse conditions; basic morphology of plants and anatomy of plant parts, as well as classification of plant material according to horticultural use and scientific nomenclature.

Soils (LH 103)
An introduction to soil science for landscape horticulture applications. Students learn about the physical, chemical and biological properties of soils and growing media. Students will learn how to sample soils and
interpret laboratory soil test results; amend soils and apply fertilizers and mulches; as well as identify, evaluate and mix soil-less media for nursery and greenhouse production.

Plant Identification and Culture (LH 104)
An introduction to a wide range of plants used in all segments of horticulture: trees, shrubs, vines, groundcovers, perennials, annuals, and cut flowers. Plant descriptions include important growing
characteristics, landscape function, as well as growing requirements and pests and diseases. Enrichment activities include specialty lectures in rhododendron, magnolia, heather, lily rose and water garden culture.

Landscape Installation and Maintenance (LH 105)
The principles and practice of plant installation and maintenance according to BCLNA standards for shrubs, trees, groundcover and flowers, including weed control, fertilization, pruning, watering, and pest control. In this applied course, students perform standard plant cultural tasks, using common landscape tools and equipment. Topics include site preparation, soil amendment, planting, transplanting and staking.

Pruning (LH 106)
The elements of pruning including pruning times, types of cuts and the role pruning plays in affecting the landscape. An introduction to the theory of pruning many of the common trees and shrubs found in Greater Victoria landscapes (zone 7-8).

Safe Work Practices (LH 107)
Students learn safe work practices in the workplace, including safe lifting practices and the safe and proper maintenance of hand tools and power equipment. Specific topics include WHIMIS and St. John Enhanced First Aid.

Pest Management (LH 108)
An introduction to the identification and control of pests, weeds, diseases and disorders of horticultural crops, including their spread and effects on plants. Students will study viruses, bacteria, fungi and weeds. Students will work with concepts of integrated pest management for horticulture, write the Provincial Pesticide Applicator exam, and
will demonstrate the competent use of a backpack sprayer.

Landscape Design (LH 109)
An introductory course in the principles and practices of good landscape design, site analysis, landscape layout, and plant choice. Students will learn basic design presentation skills and effective techniques to encourage design client satisfaction.

Turf Grass Management (LH 111)
An introductory course covering the identification and classification of turf grasses and the principles of installation and maintenance of residential turf according to BCLNA standards. Students will practice seeding, irrigation, fertilization, mowing, aeration, de-thatching, and edge trimming.

Irrigation and Drainage (LH 112)
Introduction to the basic principles of irrigation design and installation and drainage systems. Students will perform basic maintenance of drainage and irrigation systems.

Business Practices (LH 114)
This course focuses on skills and strategies for obtaining employment and the principles of starting a small horticultural business. Topics include communication skills and effective human relations. Clear and effective oral and written communications will be emphasized. The course will also cover the basic legal requirements and effective strategies for starting your own business.
